The 15th of June, 1960 is recorded as a golden day in the academic history of Gujarat University. On this historic day, Sardar Vallabhbhai Arts College was established in the historic Walled City area of Ahmedabad. For the first time, the unique and socially relevant concept of “Earn and Learn” was introduced, laying a strong foundation for self-reliance along with education.
The primary objective behind the establishment of this college was to ensure that economically weak, working-class and socially backward students of this area could pursue higher education at an affordable cost. With a humanitarian vision to take education to the most marginalized section of society, this institution was founded. This ideology later paved the way for the establishment of several educational institutions under the umbrella of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Education Trust.
The founder Principal of this great institution was Late Shri Chimanbhai Patel, former Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was not only a distinguished political leader but also a Professor of Economics and a visionary educationist who laid a strong academic foundation for the college by building a team of committed and highly qualified faculty members.
Late Dr. Urmilaben Patel, wife of Late Shri Chimanbhai Patel, also served as Principal of the college and made significant contributions through her services as a Member of the Rajya Sabha and as Union Minister of State for Energy. Her efforts strengthened the academic discipline and institutional values of the college.
At present, the institution continues to grow under the supervision of Shri Sruhyadbhai Patel, who follows the ideals of his parents and works with dedication for the holistic development of the college.
Today, the college is led by Dr. Jagdishbhai S. Chaudhary, an alumnus of the same institution and the current Principal. Under his leadership the college continues to move forward with academic innovation, value-based learning and strong participation in activities such as NCC, sports, cultural programmes and social service initiatives.
The vision of S. V. Arts College, Ahmedabad is to nurture students through quality and value-based education, enriching them with knowledge, culture and sensitivity, and shaping them into responsible, ethical and socially committed citizens. The college aims to develop national consciousness, research aptitude, creativity and leadership skills along with academic excellence, thereby preparing globally competent and aware human beings.
